CPR and the Workplace

Knowing CPR is not just a handy trick, it is truly a life-saving action that has saved millions of lives all over the planet. While many people only think of having to use CPR on a complete stranger, remember friends, acquaintances and loved ones could need CPR at a moment’s notice. You also spend an insurmountable time at your workplace. Based on the sheer amount of hours spent there, the odds someone needing CPR at work is very high.

Take, for example, a traditional office setting. There are people of all ages and sizes. Some are in perfect health, others the polar opposite. Those in ill-health could be struck by a heart attack and need CPR while sitting at their desk. Conversely, the co-worker that you think may be in great health could have a long family history of heart ailments and is a high risk as well.

Even if you don’t work in an office, there are plenty of other places where you may need to save someone’s life. Consider any position where employees are doing hard and physical work, like construction. Many construction positions are very labor intensive. If a worker with a weakened heart is in one of the positions, the chances of him or her suffering a heart attack will skyrocket. Obviously they would not be placed in that position if their condition had been known, but many people choose to keep their health issues to themselves for fear of being let go.

On the flip side, you may work in a place where the customers are pushing themselves to the limits. This could by a gym, a pool, or an amateur sporting venue. You’d be surprised at how many coaches or trainers don’t know CPR, let alone are certified in it. Even if you have little interaction with the customers, such as a front desk clerk, you may suddenly need to deliver CPR at a moment’s notice. Never rule out that you may need to perform CPR!

If you are a manager and have the most employee,  and/or customer interaction, strongly consider becoming certified in CPR and first aid. Many times your employer will cover the costs of the training and will likely be impressed that you took the initiative to go a step further than most. The American Heart Association offers online cpr training courses at very affordable rates. These courses can be done at your desk and at your convenience. Those in upper management should strongly consider getting your entire workforce trained in CPR or first aid. This is especially true if you work closely with those doing physical work. Depending on your location, it could take paramedics more than just a few minutes to arrive. When dealing with a heart attack or a related issue, every second counts. Don’t take the chance of losing an employee or customer!
